💛 Why We Help and How to Avoid Burnout: The Psychology of Charity

We often notice that the desire to engage in charity arises at the most unexpected moment. We see a story about helping children, read a post about fundraising for rehabilitation, and something inside us responds. But a day or two passes, and we put off the decision. Psychologists say our brain is tricky: it fears uncertainty. We do not know if our donation will reach the recipient or if we will be deceived. This fear is the main brake. And it is unfounded: support for families in need is often built on trust and transparency. But even when we decide, another trap appears. We want to help everyone and immediately. We transfer money to several places, subscribe to a dozen news feeds, read every story, and after a month we feel drained. This is a path to burnout. Yet charity is not a sprint but a marathon. It is better to choose one format and integrate it into your life. For example, a regular donation by subscription: a small amount, but every month. Or volunteering once a quarter: come to help with cleaning, deliver items, conduct a workshop. Or simply share information: repost a fundraising announcement, tell colleagues in a chat. Information support is also a huge help because more people learn about the need. Some offer their skills: an accountant can help with reports, a designer with layout, a lawyer with consultation. It is important to remember: to help for a long time, you need to take care of yourself. Do not read all the bad news in a row, do not blame yourself if you did not manage to transfer money this month. Allow yourself not to be perfect. Another secret: find joy in the process. Helping children or adults is not only about pain but also about recovery, about small victories. When you see that after rehabilitation a person has gotten back on their feet or smiled for the first time in a month, it gives you energy. We often underestimate the power of simple things. A box of puzzles for a ward, warm socks, an hour of video call conversation — this changes the day of a specific family. It is also useful to team up with friends: together raise money for a specific goal, for example, to pay for a therapy course. This way it is more fun, and the amount accumulates faster. The main thing is not to turn help into a race. You are not obliged to save the world. You simply do what you can. And that is enough. Next time you feel the desire to help, ask yourself a simple question: what am I ready to do regularly, without harm to myself? And start small. An amount of one hundred rubles sent today can become a habit for years. And a habit is the real sustainable charity that does not deplete but fills you.
Together we can save the lives of children who need help!
