When money isn’t everything: what families really need and how volunteers help 💛
We often notice that when it comes to charity, most people immediately think only about money. Of course, helping children and supporting families is impossible without financial contributions, but in practice the most valuable thing often lies beyond the wallet. Donations cover bills for treatment, rehabilitation, and medicine, but there are things that cannot be bought with any amount of money. For example, time and simple human presence. When a family ends up in the hospital for long months, their usual world collapses. Parents are forced to leave their jobs, put everyday life on hold, and most importantly, they often find themselves in complete isolation. And this is where volunteers come to help. Someone comes to sit with the child while the mother takes a shower or simply sleeps for an hour without worry. Someone helps with homework for older children who stayed at home. There are those who take on accompaniment: meeting a train, driving to a procedure, helping to sort out documents. Very often they ask not for expensive items, but for everyday consumables: wet wipes, baby food, diapers, hygiene products. It seems like a small thing, but in a hospital setting this small thing becomes a lifesaver. Another request we constantly hear is education. Children who undergo long treatment fall behind in the school curriculum, and catching up later is very hard. Volunteer teachers or simply educated adults help them keep up, conducting short lessons right in the hospital room or online. In addition, many families need informational support: they need to know what benefits they are entitled to, where to apply for a quota, what rehabilitation to choose after discharge. And here the role of volunteers is often irreplaceable — they prevent families from drowning in bureaucracy. The practical benefit from ordinary people is enormous: you can set up a regular donation — even a small amount each month provides stability. You can become a volunteer and dedicate a couple of hours a week. You can spread information among acquaintances or pass on needed items. Help for a family comes in different forms, but it is united by one thing: the desire to be there and not leave them in trouble. And this is more valuable than any money.
